BALI COFFEE GUIDE

When I set off to this Indonesian island, I knew it would deliver on beautiful beaches, exotic temples and friendly locals. However little did I know that this small isle would harbour one of my favourite things…coffee! Here is your Bali Coffee guide

After hiring a local guide, I Wayan Karmana (waytobali@ymail.com), he assisted me in my search for the Islands best Java.

Let's start off with the most popular…Kopi luwak or civet coffee. Perhaps one of the worlds most famous  (and expensive). Although not unique to Bali and found in other locations in Indonesia, this type of coffee refers to a "unique" roasting process. The beans of coffee berries are  eaten and excreted by the Asian palm civet , or a type of mongoose . Yep you heard it right…coffee beans eaten and pooped out, than roasted…yummy. Not to worry there are three layers to the coffee berry and only the first layer is actually digested, the second is roasted off.

The most beautiful place you can taste Kopi Coffee is at Bali Pulina outside of Ubud. After a guided tour of their plantation which overlooks stunning rice fields you actually get to sample a whole variety of coffees. From ginger to vanilla and yes finally the Kopi! How did it taste you may ask…well it was extremely smooth and light. Personally I like my coffee with a bit more bang.

Not to worry the tour continues…

Located in the centre of Ubud (and 6 other locations in Indonesia) is Anomali Coffee roasters (Anomali means "something different"). Here I experienced one of the best lattes of my life!  The coffee which was local was smooth and rich. The baristas were young, friendly and very knowledgable.

Located in the South East part of Bali in the beach town of Sanur is the recently opened Kopi Kiosk Coffee Hut.(Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur, beside Hardy's supermarket). Opened by a New Yorker who moved to Bali, this adorable little outpost offers a small but delicious menu of local beans. They offer them up either hot or iced.
